# Apple Account (Apple ID) locked or disabled: what to do

When Apple locks an account “for security reasons”, the way back is a password reset. If you can't reset it, account recovery gets you in after a waiting period that nobody can shorten.

Last updated: October 2026

## In short

### How do I unlock a disabled Apple Account?

If the message says the account was disabled or locked for security reasons, reset your password: change it on a trusted device you're still signed in on, or choose Forgot password? and follow the steps. If it says the account is locked or not active, tap Request Access in the alert or go to iforgot.apple.com. If you can't reset the password, request account recovery; Apple says Apple Support can't shorten the wait.

## What the message means

- “This Apple Account has been disabled for security reasons” or “locked for security reasons”: the account locked itself to protect you, for example after a password or other details were entered wrongly too many times. Resetting the password gets you back in.
- “Your Apple Account is locked” or “not active”: you might be able to request access with Request Access in the alert.
- “Your Media & Purchases account has been disabled”: you might be able to request reactivation by tapping Continue in the alert.
- “This Apple Account is locked and can't be used”, or a denied request: Apple says you can create a new Apple Account, and if you need Activation Lock removed and have proof of purchase, you can start an Activation Lock support request.

## Reset the password

1. If you're still signed in on another iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch or Apple Vision Pro, change the password there. It's the quickest way.
2. Otherwise choose Forgot password? wherever you sign in and follow the steps. Have your recovery factors ready: your trusted phone number, a code from your recovery contact, your Apple Account email address or the card on the account.
3. If you'll soon have your trusted device or number back, Apple suggests waiting for it, because you'll regain access more quickly.

## Account recovery when you can't reset

With no trusted device and no recovery factors, request account recovery at iforgot.apple.com in Safari, or in the Apple Support app on a borrowed device (Reset Password, then Help Someone Else). For your security it can take several days or longer.

- Within 72 hours you get a confirmation email, or an iMessage for accounts that only use a phone number, with the date and time you can expect to regain access.
- The wait is fixed: Apple says contacting Apple Support can't shorten it, and a second request might make it longer.
- Signing in on an Apple device with the account cancels the request. If you started on the web, Apple says to turn off all your Apple devices during the wait.
- When the wait is over, Apple contacts you by email and by text or automated call. If you don't hear from Apple, go to apple.com/recover after the time given in your email.

## If you didn't request account recovery

Someone may be trying to get into your account. Apple says to use the cancellation link in the confirmation email right away, then consider changing your password and reviewing your account security.

## What doesn't help

- Calling Apple Support to speed up recovery: Apple says the waiting period is fixed
- Sending another recovery request: unless you've found more recovery factors, Apple says it won't help and might extend the wait
- Paying a third party to “unlock” an Apple Account or remove Activation Lock: Apple's own support request asks for your proof of purchase

## Frequently asked questions

### How long does Apple account recovery take?

Apple says several days or longer. You get a confirmation email within 72 hours with the expected date and time, and you can check the status at iforgot.apple.com with the same email address and phone number you used to start.

### I didn't get the confirmation email.

Wait the full 72 hours, then check your spam or junk folder. If it's still missing, check iforgot.apple.com: if the request is active, the expected time is shown there; if not, it may have been cancelled or not submitted, and you can start a new one.

### I set up a recovery key or a security key.

Apple says the process to regain access is different if you set up one of these optional features, and it has separate instructions for regaining access with a recovery key or a physical security key.
