# eBay account hacked: what to do now

eBay says it will work with you to secure a hacked account, and may place a temporary hold on it for your protection. Here's what to do, based on eBay's help pages.

### What should I do if my eBay account was hacked?

If you can sign in, change your password immediately, check your contact information, shipping addresses and payment details, and change back anything the intruder altered. If you can't sign in, contact eBay immediately. eBay also recommends changing your email password.

## Signs your eBay account was hacked

- Your password, contact information or address details changed
- Bids, offers or purchases you didn't make
- Listings you didn't create

## If you can still sign in

1. Change your password immediately.
2. Check your contact information, shipping addresses and payment details, and change back anything the intruder altered.
3. Check your active bids and listings to make sure they're yours.
4. Contact eBay to remove unauthorized bids or listings. If there's been no fraudulent activity, eBay says you don't need to contact it.

## If you can't sign in

Contact eBay immediately: it says it will help secure the account. For your protection, eBay may place a temporary hold on the account.

Change the password of your personal email account too. eBay says it should be different from your eBay password.

## Money and purchases

If someone used your eBay account without permission, eBay says to contact your credit card company and your bank, and that you may also want to file a police report.

## What doesn't help

- Using the same password for eBay and your email
- Leaving unauthorized bids or listings in place: contact eBay to remove them
- Waiting when you can't sign in: eBay says to contact it immediately

eBay recommends a strong password you don't use elsewhere, a different password for your email, 2-step verification, and passkeys, which let you sign in with a fingerprint, Face ID, pattern or PIN instead of a password.
