In short
Can a frozen PayPal or Stripe account be unfrozen?
Often, when the provider is asking for information you can supply, such as ID, business documents, invoices, proof of delivery or your refund policy. PayPal says that once you complete the required steps, a review usually takes 3 business days. If the account was limited for a policy violation, funds can stay held for longer.
Is my money lost if the account is closed?
Not necessarily. Stripe says reserved funds are released at the end of the reserve period if they aren't needed for disputes or refunds. PayPal's US user agreement allows a balance to be held for up to 180 days in some cases. What applies to you depends on the provider, your country and the reason in the notice.
Why payment providers freeze accounts
Payment providers carry the risk when a customer disputes a payment, so they review sellers all the time. PayPal lists regulatory requirements, its Acceptable Use Policy, unauthorized use, higher-risk activity such as many chargebacks or a sudden jump in sales, and inactivity as reasons for limiting an account. Shopify names missing information, incorrect bank details, product eligibility and legal action as reasons for payout holds.
The result can be a hold on single payments, a reserve on part of your balance, paused payouts or, in serious cases, closure. The notice in your dashboard and the provider's email say what they need, and that wording decides which route is still open.
When we can help
- PayPal limited your account and asks for documents or information.
- Stripe paused payouts, set a reserve or started a review of your business.
- Shopify Payments put your payouts on hold or asks for verification.
- Funds are held after a spike in sales, a new product line or a wave of disputes.
When we can't help
- The business sells products or services the provider prohibits.
- The account was used for fraud, or you can't show you own the business.

Frequently asked questions
Will you log in to my PayPal, Stripe or Shopify account?
No. Only you log in and upload documents, on the provider's own site. We prepare the replies and the evidence with you, and we never ask for your password or codes.
Someone offers to release my funds for a fee paid in crypto. Is it real?
Treat it as a scam. Providers release funds through their own review, not through outsiders paid in crypto or gift cards. You can check the message with our scam message checker.
How long can PayPal hold my money?
PayPal's US user agreement says risk-based holds generally last up to 21 days, and that a balance can be held for up to 180 days if needed to protect against liability or after an Acceptable Use Policy violation, or longer under a court order or legal requirement. Terms differ by country, so check the agreement for yours.
