How to spot a recovery scam

Is this message a scam?

Paste the message you received about your account. We highlight the classic signs of a recovery scam straight away. The check runs only in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.

What the checker looks for

Eight signs that show up again and again in recovery scams. One of them is enough to stop and think.

  1. 1Asks for your passwordNo legitimate recovery service or platform employee needs your password.
  2. 2Asks for a verification codeAnyone who asks for the code you just received is trying to take over your account.
  3. 3Wants upfront payment, crypto or gift cardsPayment in crypto or gift cards before anyone has looked at your case is a classic scam pattern.
  4. 4Claims to be platform staff or an insiderInstagram says it never contacts you about account security through Direct Messages, and no outsider can sell you access to platform staff.
  5. 5Promises a guaranteed or very fast resultThe platform makes the final decision, so honest helpers can't guarantee an outcome or a timeframe.
  6. 6Pressures you to act nowThreats that your account will be deleted unless you act immediately are designed to stop you thinking.
  7. 7Contains a suspicious linkShortened links and addresses that imitate a platform's name are common in phishing. Use the platform's own app or website instead.
  8. 8Uses a badge or copyright lureFake “blue badge” offers and “copyright violation” warnings are some of the most common phishing lures.

If it looks like a scam

  1. 1Don't reply and don't open any link in the message.
  2. 2Never send a password, a code or any payment.
  3. 3Report the account or email on the platform and block it.
  4. 4If you already shared a code or password, change your password now and follow our hacked account checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Is my message sent to you?

No. The check runs entirely in your browser. The text isn't sent to us or anyone else, and it isn't saved.

If no signs are found, is the message safe?

Not necessarily. The checker only looks for common patterns. Treat any request for a password, a code or upfront payment as a scam, whoever it claims to come from.

Someone using your name contacted me. Is it you?

Compare their details with the official channels on our About page. We never ask for passwords, codes or payment in crypto or gift cards.
