In short
How do I recover my Yahoo account?
Go to Yahoo's Sign-in Helper at login.yahoo.com/forgot and enter your recovery phone number or email address to reset your password or find your Yahoo ID. If the account is locked after too many unsuccessful sign-ins, Yahoo says it unlocks automatically after 12 hours, or right away through the Sign-in Helper. If your recovery details are wrong or out of reach, Yahoo warns you may not be able to get the account back, although Yahoo Customer Care may still be able to help, depending on the account's eligibility.
Locked, hacked or forgotten?
- Forgotten password or Yahoo ID: the Sign-in Helper resets the password or finds the ID with your recovery phone number or email.
- “Invalid ID or Password”: the combination you entered doesn't match Yahoo's records.
- Locked: after too many unsuccessful sign-in attempts, Yahoo locks the account temporarily. It unlocks automatically after 12 hours.
- Asked to verify again and again: Yahoo may have detected a threat to the account and temporarily locked access to protect your information.
Use the Sign-in Helper
- 1Open login.yahoo.com/forgot, Yahoo's password reset and account recovery tool.
- 2Enter your recovery phone number or email address.
- 3Enter the verification code Yahoo sends to that phone or email, then set a new password.
- 4Once you're back in, turn on 2-Step Verification, as Yahoo suggests.
Why Yahoo asks you to verify
If something looks unusual, Yahoo asks for an extra verification step after the correct password and sends a code to the Yahoo app, your recovery phone or your recovery email. Common reasons:
- Yahoo notices suspicious activity, or many attempts with incorrect passwords.
- You're using an unfamiliar browser or device, or you're away from your usual location.
- You sign in through a VPN or proxy, in a private or incognito window, or after clearing your cookies.
If your Yahoo Mail was hacked
- Change your password immediately and review the Yahoo Account security page for sign-ins from unexpected locations.
- Delete app passwords you don't recognize and make sure your recovery options are up to date.
- Check the settings hackers change: filters, auto-forwarding, reply-to and send-only addresses, vacation response, signature, sending name and blocked addresses.
- Turn on two-step verification and keep antivirus software up to date. If your recovery email is with another provider, check its security settings too.
How to reach real Yahoo support
Yahoo's support starts at Yahoo Help Central: choose the product, then select Contact Us where it's available. Depending on the question and your region, help comes by email, chat or help articles, and Yahoo notes that not every product or issue has a contact option.
Yahoo says to make sure any Yahoo support site you use has a web address that ends with yahoo.com.
What doesn't help
- Calling a “Yahoo support” number from an ad or search result: Yahoo's own support is reached from Help Central, on an address ending in yahoo.com
- Paying someone to “unlock” the account: recovery runs through the Sign-in Helper and your recovery details
- Giving anyone the verification code Yahoo sends you
