Netflix account hacked: get back in and sign everyone else out

Netflix's own steps are short: a new password, sign out of every device, and remove email addresses you don't recognize from profiles. Here's the order, based on Netflix's help center.

In short

How do I stop someone from using my Netflix account?

Change your Netflix password and sign out of devices you don't recognize. When you reset the password, Netflix recommends leaving “Sign out all devices” checked. If you can't reset the password, or suspicious activity continues, Netflix says to contact it.

Signs someone else is using your account

  • An email about a new sign-in from a device you don't recognize
  • A “first-time sign-in” email for a household member you don't know
  • A profile with an email address you don't recognize
  • Charges or account activity you don't recognize

Get back in and lock them out

  1. 1Go to netflix.com/loginhelp and ask for a password reset link by email or text message. Texts only work if a phone number is on the account.
  2. 2If you can't use your email or phone number, Netflix says you might be able to use your credit card information instead.
  3. 3Open the reset email: the link expires in 24 hours. Choose a new password you don't use anywhere else.
  4. 4Leave “Sign out all devices” checked, then save.

Check profiles and devices

  1. 1On your Account page, open Manage Profiles and remove any email address you don't recognize: anyone using it is signed out within 24 hours.
  2. 2On the Manage Access and Devices page, sign out of devices you don't recognize, or use Sign Out of All Devices at the bottom.
  3. 3Devices that haven't been active in the last 90 days aren't listed, and new devices can take up to 48 hours to appear.

Keep it from happening again

  • A password used only for Netflix: at least 8 characters, with upper- and lower-case letters, numbers and symbols
  • An up-to-date email address and phone number, so you can recover the account
  • No bought or shared sign-ins: Netflix says accounts sold on third-party sites are often stolen

What Netflix never asks for

  • Card numbers or bank details in a text or email
  • Your Netflix password
  • Payment through a third-party vendor or website

Frequently asked questions

Can I get my Netflix account back if the email was changed?

Netflix says that if you can't use your email or phone number to reset the password, you might be able to use your credit card information. If you still can't reset it, contact Netflix.

Why don't I see every device on the list?

Netflix says devices that haven't been active in the last 90 days, or were only used for Netflix games or Tudum, aren't shown, and that devices can take up to 48 hours to appear.

A text or email asked for my card details to keep Netflix.

Netflix says it never asks for card numbers, bank details or your password by text or email. Don't click: open the Netflix app or type netflix.com yourself. You can check the message with our scam message checker.
