In short
How do I recover a hacked WhatsApp account?
Open WhatsApp on your phone, tap Log back in and enter the 6-digit code WhatsApp sends by SMS or call. Registering again logs out every other device. If it asks for a two-step PIN you don't know, WhatsApp says to wait 7 days and try again. Never share the code with anyone.
Step 1: Register your number again
WhatsApp says the only way to remove someone from your account is to register it again with the 6-digit code sent to your number. This automatically logs out every other device.
- 1Open WhatsApp on a phone with your SIM card and tap Log back in, then Continue.
- 2Enter your full international phone number.
- 3Enter the 6-digit code WhatsApp sends by SMS or phone call.
If it asks for a two-step PIN you don't know
The attacker may have turned on two-step verification. WhatsApp says that if you don't have the PIN, you should wait 7 days and try again. Either way, anyone using your account is logged out as soon as you enter the SMS code.
What doesn't work
- Changing your password: WhatsApp says it doesn't remove someone who has taken over the account
- Reporting your own account before recovering it: WhatsApp warns it could be banned
- Recovering without your SIM: WhatsApp says it isn't possible without a SIM with the same number
- Paying someone to recover it: the code only reaches your phone
After you're back in
- 1Turn on two-step verification with a PIN only you know.
- 2Check your linked devices and log out any you don't recognise.
- 3Tell family and friends: the attacker may have messaged them pretending to be you.
What about your old chats?
WhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted and messages are stored on your device. WhatsApp says someone who registered your account on another phone can't read your past conversations.
Frequently asked questions
A friend is asking me for a 6-digit WhatsApp code. Should I send it?
No. WhatsApp says never to share your registration code, not even with friends or family. Such requests often come from an account that has already been taken over.
Can I recover WhatsApp without my old SIM card?
WhatsApp says it isn't possible to recover an account without a SIM card with the same phone number. Ask your mobile operator for a replacement SIM first.
Can you recover my WhatsApp for me?
No. The code only goes to your phone, so only you can do it. If the attacker also took over your Instagram or Facebook, we can help with those through the official processes.
